The Evolution of Foreign Direct Investment

The foreign direct investment (FDI) inward balance to Croatia increased more than 13.7 times between 2000 and 2022, rising from approximately 2.785 billion dollars to about 38.341 billion dollars, marking an increase of approximately 35.529 billion dollars during the mentioned period, with an average annual rate of 1.615 billion dollars.

Croatia's outward investment balance increased by over 7 times, rising from 952 million dollars in 2000 to 6.796 billion dollars in 2022, an increase estimated at about 5.844 billion dollars over 12 years, with an average annual rate of about 266 million dollars.

Regarding annual inward investment flows to Croatia during the period 2018-2022, it is noted that they followed a declining trend during the first half of the period, decreasing from 1.199 billion dollars in 2018 to just 146 million dollars in 2020. They then rebounded to reach 4.427 billion dollars in 2021, followed by 3.675 billion dollars in 2022.

Croatian outward investment flows exhibited continuous fluctuation during the study period, recording negative figures in 2019 and 2022 amounting to 116 million dollars and 272 million dollars respectively, indicating some divestment of Croatian investments abroad.
