The Evolution of Foreign Direct Investment

The inward foreign direct investment (FDI) to Albania increased significantly from around $247 million in 2000 to approximately $3.255 billion in 2010, more than thirteenfold. This FDI stock further tripled in 2022 compared to 2010, reaching around $11.397 billion.

Albania's outward FDI has been modest, with no data available for the years 2000-2003. However, it amounted to around $25 million in 2004 and increased to approximately $154 million in 2010, more than sixfold. Similarly, this outward FDI stock increased more than sixfold between 2010 and 2022, reaching $978 million.

Regarding the annual movement of these inward flows during the period 2018-2022, they decreased until 2021 and then rose in 2022 to reach $1.434 billion, compared to $1.290 billion at the beginning of the period in 2018. Albanian outward investments experienced fluctuations during the period, achieving their highest value in 2022 at around $163 million.
